Divorce / Dissolution
Divorce
An adversarial process to end the marriage. One spouse files first, establishes grounds and completes the required affidavits. This process can be contested or uncontested. The court will divide property, debt, award spousal support if appropriate, and allocate the custody, parenting time, and child support when a minor child is involved. The timeline can vary depending on those factors.
Dissolution
By contrast, this process also ends the marriage, but in an amicable manner. This requires a full agreement before the paperwork is filed as to all issues: debt, assets, support and, if there are children, custody and child support. The timeline is generally much faster, more straightforward, and cheaper than a divorce.
